Marine lubricant additive technology

New marine diesel cylinder lubricant additive packages meet 40BN MAN Cat II performance requirements

In a marine industry working to decarbonise to meet International Maritime Organization (IMO) 2050 target of net zero, the use of alternative fuels is one key solution. Shippers need products they can trust to improve efficiency while also ensuring superior engine performance and excellent cleanliness when running with alternative fuels.

Infineum has developed 40BN MAN Cat II additive packages, applicable for all engines and recommended for MAN B&W two-stroke engines Mark 9 and higher, that are proven to improve operational efficacy for engines running on <0.5% sulphur fuel oil and alternative fuels (methanol, ethanol, LNG and LPG). Introducing the new Infineum 40BN MAN CAT II additive packages:

The marine industry is moving towards decarbonization, with vessels switching to very low sulphur fuel oils or VLSFO since IMO 2020.

However, using VLSFO with 40BN marine diesel cylinder lubricant resulted in deposit build-up on various parts of the piston head thereby affecting overall performance.

To maintain engine cleanliness, a higher performing cylinder oil, 40BN CAT II was developed for MAN B&W two-stroke engines Mark 9 and above.

Alternating 40BN CAT I with 100BN CAT II keeps the engine clean but it is not an optimal solution, only an interim option.

The two new Infineum 40BN MAN CAT II additive packages offer vessel operators a single oil solution and simplify operation for ship crew.

Infineum, a Specialty Chemicals Company with powerful research and development capabilities, has formulated not one but two innovations that deliver superior protection and excellent cleanliness.

Infineum M7095 is an approved 20BN additive package by major OEMs that can be combined with Infineum M7110 booster additive package to meet 40BN MAN CAT II performance requirements. This additive package eliminates the use of bright stock in its formulation.

Infineum M8040 is a single additive package.

These two additive packages provide customers with alternatives that suit their supply chain operating models and are engineered for MAN B&W two-stroke engines Mark 9 and higher.

To validate the new technology, Infineum collaborated with MAN Energy Solutions in conducting individual field tests of 3,200 and 2,500 running hours of VLSFO operations.

Both 40BN test oils demonstrated a high cleaning performance, comparable to 100BN CAT II reference oil at the same feed rate.

In comparison, vessel operators using a 40BN CAT I cylinder oil will need to increase the feed rate to reach the same level of detergency and cleanliness performance of a 100BN CAT II cylinder oil, which will lead to increased consumption of lubricant.

As per the requirement of MAN Energy Solutions, Infineum as a global leader in lubricants and fuel additives has completed Pre-screening and Main No-objection Letter service tests. Both new additive packages were also run on less than 0.1% sulphur fuel for 1,500 hours separately.

Infineum will guide our read across customers on completing 2,000 hours confirmation test.

The Main No-objection Letter from the MAN Energy Solutions bears testimony to their excellent cleaning ability and overall performance.

Infineum 40BN MAN CAT II additive packages are specifically designed to operate effectively as a single oil use in two-stroke engines operating on VLSFO and less than 0.1% sulphur fuels for vessels trading globally and transiting in and out of emission control areas.

Therefore, vessel operators could potentially replace three different BN cylinder oils with one 40BN MAN CAT II cylinder oil to save costs.

Their detergent and dispersant capabilities keep the engine clean with improved cleanliness observed across all areas of piston heads that is comparable to a 100BN CAT II cylinder oil.

This translates to better performance and higher engine efficiency with reduced maintenance costs and time between overhauls.

Infineum 40BN MAN CAT II additive packages are also applicable for all engines and recommended for MAN B&W two-stroke engines Mark 9 and higher, thereby improving operational efficiency.

With feed rate optimisation, vessel owners can now embark on their sustainability journey with lower oil consumption and reduced carbon emissions.

Infineum 40BN MAN CAT II additive packages are also recommended for MAN B&W two-stroke engines running on alternative fuels (LNG, LPG, Methanol, Ethane), supporting the transition towards decarbonization and sustainability.

Infineum 40BN MAN CAT II additive packages demonstrate technology excellence in action with improved operational efficacy that keep engines clean and running more efficiently for longer.
